Justin, 52, had an extensive career in the construction industry as a contracts manager for over 20 years. However, in 2013, his life took a dramatic turn when he suffered a stroke that left him unable to work. His wife gave up her career to support him and become his full-time carer.

Justin’s stroke had a significant impact on his life, as he could no longer work and the financial strain became apparent when they were struggling with mounting debts.  Both were on Universal Credit (UC), with Justin receiving the highest rate of UC and Personal Independence Payment (PIP). Arrears on their gas and electricity bills were a significant issue and this is what prompted the to reach out for support from us.

When we received Justin’s wife’s call, we initiated a thorough financial assessment to understand their situation and how we could help. However, given Justin’s extended absence from the construction industry due to his stroke, he was not eligible for industry-specific assistance.

Therefore, we proactively contacted the utility company on their behalf to negotiate a solution for their arrears. After discussing their financial constraints, we secured an agreement with the utility company to provide a resolution. We offered to contribute money towards the arrears, and in return, the utility company agreed to clear the remaining debt and establish a repayment plan based on their affordability moving forward.

The intervention proved successful, and the arrears on their electric and gas bills were cleared. This alleviated a significant financial burden and ensured they could move forward without the looming worry of going without essentials.

Justin’s wife expressed her gratitude for the support, saying “Thank you for all your help and support, I really appreciate it.” We remain committed to supporting Justin and his family in their journey  and referred him to ‘Christians Against Poverty’ and ‘B&CE’ for additional support.

Justin’s case highlights the challenges faced by individuals who experience life-changing events such as a stroke. The support provided by us helped ease the financial strain, giving them a chance to focus on rebuilding their lives and adjusting to the new normal.
