Nottingham & Derby Committee – A New Chapter

7th August 2024

Our Nottingham and Derbyshire club is appealing for individuals and businesses to support their successful fundraising and networking activities.

They have been hugely successful and thanks to the support of local individuals and businesses, have raised over £530,000 in the past ten years. This fundraising has in turn provided a lifeline to the construction community offering vital support including emergency food shops, assistance with utility bills, counselling, and free wellbeing training.

They are now looking to increase the number of fundraising events and are seeking volunteers who may be able to assist in any way, whether it’s helping with planning or simply becoming a member of the club, all support is welcome. They are also looking to local businesses to sponsor events and help raise awareness of the charity’s services.

The appeal comes from James Edgar, the current Committee Chair who is standing down as chair after ten busy years. James, owner of AB Components in Ilkeston, first became involved when he wanted to give something back to the industry that meant so much to him.

“We’ve seen the demand for our services increase every year and it’s great that the word of support is reaching those that need it. Knowing that we are helping to change lives is incredibly rewarding and being part of the Lighthouse Charity is inspiring. We’re not just a committee, we’re a family.”

Annual fundraising activities include a summer boat trip along the River Trent, BBQs. summer balls, white collar boxing and Christmas lunches. These hugely popular events are supported by construction companies from across the region who not only raise much needed funds, but also use it as an opportunity to network with industry friends. Last year alone, supporters in the region raised over £100,000.

Sarah Bolton, CEO of the Lighthouse Charity offered her wholehearted thanks to James for his valued contribution in the last ten years. “Our regional clubs rely on a network of dedicated volunteers that do an absolutely fantastic job of holding unique fundraising events and helping to spread the message of support. James’ has transformed our Nottingham and Derby region and I would like to say a huge thank you for his time and dedication.”

The new committee chair will be Sarah Missenden, Sales Manager for Burdens in Nottingham. She first attended one of the charity’s events over 20 years ago and became inspired to volunteer,

“We’ve gone from ringing round to sell event tables to selling out in hours” said Sarah, “but we want to grow even more and that’s why we’d love to hear from anyone who would like to play their part, offer innovative ideas and be part of the Lighthouse ‘family’.”
