Kiltwalker Mark Dooley Raises Funds for Lighthouse Charity

Stewarton resident Mark Dooley recently completed the Kiltwalk, a challenging walking fundraiser, to support our charity.

Mark, who works for Blackwood Plant Hire, was initially hesitant about participating. “To be honest, I never practiced once,” he admits. “The last thing I wanted to do after work was go for a walk!”

However, Mark’s partner, Dawn, convinced him to join her after hearing friends were participating. The decision on which charity to support was an easy one for Mark.

“I hadn’t heard of the Lighthouse Charity before,” he explains, “but then my company received a new excavator with their logo and the #makeitvisible tagline. The response from construction workers on sites I visited was very positive.”

Mark was further impressed by hearing stories from colleagues about our services. “I was surprised at how open they were about something so personal, especially in our male-dominated industry,” he says.

This Kiltwalk marked his first solo fundraising effort. “I wanted to choose a charity close to my work and the industry I’m involved in,” he shares. “I’m glad I could support the Lighthouse Charity and I’m incredibly grateful to the generous people who donated during these uncertain times.”

The day began early for Mark and Dawn, who arrived in Glasgow city centre by 6:30 am. “It was peaceful until the crowds started gathering,” he recalls. “The atmosphere was electric as we set off at 8:00 am.”

Mark enjoyed the walk more than he anticipated, especially with the sunny weather. However, the last few miles presented a challenge. “I had to change my trainers after turning my ankle,” he says.

Dawn kept Mark’s spirits high throughout the walk. “She provided both good and bad banter,” he laughs, “and reminded me there was a cold beer waiting at the finish line.”

The route offered many memorable moments, from the friendly volunteers and cheering crowds to the children handing out treats. “But the best moment,” Mark says, “was crossing the finish line. It was overwhelming to see so many people cheering everyone on.”

With a newfound appreciation for the Kiltwalk experience, Mark has vowed to participate again. “It was an absolutely brilliant day and definitely worthwhile,” he concludes.
