Heathrow celebrates the Rugby World Cup

21st November 2019

To coincide with the Rugby World Cup, Heathrow ran a series of rugby-related engagement events for ‘Team Heathrow’.

Their campaign kicked off with two sessions on Mental Health and Resilience.  They invited rugby legend Jason Robinson to talk to the project teams, he spoke candidly about his life, success in the face of adversity and his own issues with mental health.  Our CEO Bill Hill also spoke about mental health issues in the construction industry and the work that we do to provide financial and emotional support to the construction community and their families.  Both sessions were well attended and the feedback was fantastic.

Next up they hosted a sports-themed ‘Quiz & Curry’ night on 9 October.  Around  106 people came along and a total of £1,300 was raised for our charity. The quiz came down to a tie-breaker between the Heathrow Express and Dyer and Butler teams with Heathrow Express emerging as overall winners.

On 16 October they held their very own Heathrow World Cup Touch Rugby Championship at the Vandals Rugby Club in Weybridge. This event was co-organised by Heathrow and Balfour Beatty and was a massive success with 15 rugby nations represented by a selection of Heathrow and supplier partner teams participating in a 6-a-side touch rugby tournament. Heathrow were once again delighted to welcome Jason Robinson who mingled with the teams and presented the raffle winners with some amazing prizes.  The weather conditions were perfect for rugby and France (aka Atkins) eventually took the winners’ accolade in a very closely contested final against runners-up Georgia (aka Turner & Townsend).

Throughout the course of our Rugby World Cup campaign, Heathrow raised an amazing £16k for our charity. A massive thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to this hugely successful campaign.

Heathrow commented;

“Heathrow were delighted to invite the Lighthouse to take part in our recent engagement campaign.  Not only do we want to increase awareness of the importance of good mental health, but also the incredible work the Lighthouse are doing for our industry to support”
