Numbers were down slightly this year but the Lincolnshire and Humber branch’s Christmas Lunch at the Beachcomber Club, Humberston was still a huge success.
On arrival, guests could not escape Jo and Rosie selling raffle tickets in the breezy entrance to the Starlight Room. A north easterly wind, off the North Sea in this part of the world, never gives warm weather.
After a good Christmas lunch, the ‘fiver’ raffle for a gallon bottle of Famous Grouse whisky got the proceedings off to a lively start and brought a big smile to the winner. This was followed by the old favourite of Stand-Up bingo.
A short video was shown to give the guests an insight into a typical case that the Charity supports. Next the Branch Chairman, Alan Hemmings, thanked the 19 companies and the guests for their support of the event and our construction workers in crisis. He thanked the Branch Committee members for their hard work in making it another successful event.
The after-lunch speaker was John Stiles, son of the 1966 World Cup Star, Nobby Stiles, who soon got the audience laughing with his football related stories. He ended by auctioning two signed photographs of his father.
Event Committee member and compere, Nick Borst performed his usual two hours, non-stop auction with his amusing repartee. Auction items ranged from Liverpool and Manchester United football tickets, a week’s caravan holiday to a vast array of cuddly toys, spirits, wine and chocolates which were all keenly bid for, with the finale of a huge teddy bear that raised over £1,000.
The Committee were very appreciative of the many donated items for the auction and raffle from both companies and individuals.
The next Christmas Lunch will be on Friday, 6 December 2019 at the same venue.
