On Friday 13 September the Central Region hosted their annual golf day at the Oxford Golf Course, the oldest golf course in Oxfordshire. All 21 teams had registered by noon with the participants making good use of the Club’s excellent lunch catering before the start. With beautiful weather conditions, three of the teams made their way to tee off at 12:25 on the par 5 holes while the remaining eighteen got into position around the course for a shotgun start at 12:30.
The Central Region has offered “hole in one” prizes at the five par 3 holes including a cash prize of £10,000 at the Eighth on all previous years and repeated the challenge this year. Usually, a combination of the excellent greens and the challenge of holing in one means that none of these prizes is claimed. However, James Cook, a guest with Smiths of Bletchingdon, beat the jinx of previous years with a fine tee shot that holed in one on the eighth. Displaying his background as a commercial manager James was very calm about his achievement, (his first hole in one), unlike his fellow golfers.
At 6:30 all players sat down to a two-course dinner followed by the prize-giving, auction and raffle. An excellent golfer in his own right, Aaron James hosting the whole thing, doing a comedy spot together with a number of comedic interventions during the evening while presenting the prizes and raising funds. Thanks to Darren’s cajoling and the generosity of all attending they raised just over £6,400 for our charity.
Team Sheehan (all Oxford players) were overall winners demonstrating that knowledge of the course is a head start in this tournament.
Special thanks to all participants and sponsors for helping to make the event successful. In particular, we would like to thank the Oxford Golf Club, for their assistance in the smooth running of the event and Earthline with Michael O’Sullivan of Moss Automotive for their very generous sponsorship of the prizes.
Details of the 2020 golf day are currently being finalised and will soon be published on our website.
