Paul is a 51-year-old construction manager who has over 20 years of experience in the construction industry. Unfortunately, Paul found himself in a challenging situation when he was suddenly let go from his foreman position.

Paul’s sudden job loss had a profound impact on his life, causing him to relapse into alcoholism after being sober for two years and he reached out for support from us. Without employment, Paul had accumulated rent arrears and was unable to afford necessities such as food. He had no friends or family to turn to for support, except for his 20-year-old daughter.

Understanding the severity of his situation, our helpline team offered Paul immediate emotional support. We assigned Paul a case worker to assess his immediate needs to help him through this tough time. He was provided with an emergency food shop, ensuring he had access to essential groceries and necessities, and we also conducted a full financial and benefits assessment to ensure he was accessing all the support available to him.

To prevent him from losing his accommodation, we intervened and managed the rent arrears payment to his landlord and also settled his phone bill arrears, further alleviating his financial burden.

Paul is recovering from his treatment at home and has applied for Personal Independence Payment (PIP). He has been offered counselling and is also receiving specialist support for chronic alcoholism. Paul is optimistic about returning to work as long as his alcoholism is under control with medication. Paul said, “Thank you so much for all of the help and support your team has given me. I really don’t know where I would be now if it wasn’t for the Lighthouse Charity. Many thanks and love.”

Paul is beginning to navigate his recovery and journey back to the workforce to regain stability, both financially and emotionally, during this critical phase of his life. Paul is now confident to reach out to us again if he needs further support in the future.

Paul’s case exemplifies the devastating impact that sudden unemployment and personal challenges can have on an individual’s life. With timely support from us, Paul is rebuilding his life.
