Bill’s Christmas Message 2022

20th December 2022

Hello

It’s been a busy year for our charity and the number of construction families reaching out for support continues to increase. We’re continuing to ensure that your money works hard to reach the people that need it most and in our recent Impact Report, we showed that for every £1 of charitable spend, we delivered £7.82 of Social Value.

We’ve also recognised that people need different kinds of help and ways to get in touch so that’s why we launched our HARDHAT text service in February to complement our existing 24/7 Construction Industry Helpline.

We’ve also expanded our network of Lighthouse Beacons. These provide a safe, non judgemental environment where people can share their issues face to face, either on their own or in a group with a shared interest, such as walking or cycling, so it’s an opportunity to get fit too!

Our Help Inside the Hard Hat campaign goes from strength to strength and to ensure we reach the ‘boots on the ground’ workforce, we’ve been on the road, visiting over 100 construction sites and builders’ trade outlets across the UK and Ireland.

This has brought us into contact with some of our industry’s most vulnerable workers, including the trades and contractors who have nowhere else to turn to for support. It’s also demonstrated the value of having an on-site team who are all from the trades themselves who can uniquely share their lived experiences of mental health issues in a down-to-earth, relatable way.

In another important development, our Company Supporter programme has also been enhanced with a number of key benefits.  One of these is that any company committing to an annual donation is now able to access scheduled online Mental Health First Aid training completely free of charge.

We’ve also got some exciting news about our new Wellbeing Academy which will launch next year. The new Academy will embrace every style and level of learning, from self paced e-learning through to achieving an MHFA approved Mental Health First Aider qualification.

We’ll also be launching a new project called Make It Visible which is aimed at uniting the whole industry behind one wellbeing programme. Make it Visible will be making wellbeing in construction. ‘in sight, on site’, so watch out for more news soon!

As always, we can never achieve what we do without you, our supporters.  Whether it’s sharing the helpline cards and posters, taking part in fundraising Lighthouse Days or becoming a Company Supporter;  everything you do makes a difference to a construction colleague in need.

So, on behalf of the Trustees and everyone at the Lighthouse Club, I would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone that has supported us this year and wish you, your family and colleagues a very safe and festive season and Happy New Year.

Best wishes

Bill Hill
