A Christmas Message from our CEO, Bill Hill

15th December 2021

Dear All,

I am not quite sure where the last year has gone but it has been a very challenging one for our construction community and our charity. We always knew that the long term effects of the pandemic would have far reaching consequences but as I look back on the past 12 months, with your support we have achieved so much.

Our 24/7 helpline continues to provide vital support to those in need and we have increased the number of case workers to support cases that require multiple interventions. By the end of this year we forecast that we will have helped over 2800 families. This is a 25% increase on the previous year. For many, we have provided life changing and life saving support.

We have also developed our Construction Industry Helpline App, with additional features such as ‘Nudge’, offering access to unbiased financial information and ‘Sleepstation’, an NHS-approved service which provides insomnia and poor sleep health support. We have also added access to a nationwide network of Lighthouse Beacons. These are physical locations where our workforce can go to discuss their problems with others in similar situations. We have also developed support for apprentices and the onsite Wellbeing First Aiders that our industry has trained.

Our wellbeing education programme has continued to grow significantly and we are now offering a huge range of CPD approved one hour masterclasses, as well as the MHFA courses supported by the CITB.

Another highlight of 2021 was the launch of a dedicated free phone helpline number for the construction community in the Republic of Ireland which means that our colleagues in Ireland can now access the same support as their counterparts in the UK.

We also launched our biggest mental health awareness campaign ever, ‘Help Inside the Hard Hat’ and over 30,000 posters have been downloaded to support the campaign with sites also featuring the campaign messages on site hoardings.

With your support we have been able to continue to improve the accessibility and scope of our charitable services. However, we also know that there are many in our workforce that do not know they can access our services at their time of need. We have very ambitious plans to create more awareness next year through our Help Inside the Hard Hat campaign and I hope we can count on your continued support.

On behalf of the Trustees and staff at the Lighthouse, I would like to extend a huge thank you to each and every one of you that has supported us in various ways during these difficult times.

I wish you all a safe and healthy festive break and a Happy New Year.

Best wishes,

Bill Hill
