The Construction 5’s annual football competition took place on Sunday June 8th on a warm and sunny day at Goals Wimbledon with 15 teams battling for the honours......
The qualification follows the world cup format, with teams playing first in groups and then moving on to knock out cup games. The only difference is that all teams get to play at least once more, with the lower half of the table going into the Plate competition; England would have liked this for their recent world cup performance!
The Plate competition produced exciting matches and was enthusiastically contested, with 1st Step Recruitment losing narrowly to Carmichael UK in the final.
The Construction Cup competition was dominated by new entrant DG Stone who scored freely throughout and conceded only one goal in total. They beat CW Plant Hire 3-0 in the final to take the trophy, which was presented by Robert Smith, Trustee, on behalf of the Lighthouse Club.
Competition Organiser Peter Wedderburn said that the competition, now in it’s 11th consecutive year, was seeing an upturn of interest as the construction sector recovers. “We are in talks with a sponsor and have plans to run a 30 team competition in 2015” he said.
The Construction 5’s raised £1500 for the Lighthouse Club and our sincere thanks to everyone who supported it.
