On the 27th June, ten challengers braved the British Summer to complete the inaugural Lighthouse to London Cycle Challenge.
The 75 mile challenge started at the Belle Tout Lighthouse at Beach Head near Eastbourne and completed at the Honourable Artillery Company in the heart of the City of London.
Our pioneering challengers were:
Patrick Bowman McNicholas Construction
David English McNicholas Construction
Howard Sanger McNicholas Construction
Roger Willey McNicholas Construction
Patrick McCoy McCoy Engineering
Colleen McCoy McCoy Engineering
Nuala McGowan McCoy Engineering
Paul Dickinson Fulcrum
Ian Foster Fulcrum
Nigel Oborne FDL
As typical of our great British Summer, the weather played a significant role and our brave cyclists were subjected to thunder storms followed by monsoon rain followed by glorious sunshine but managed to overcome all obstacles to complete the course in just over 7 hours!!
Not only do they now have the glowing satisfaction of completing our first Lighthouse to London Cycle Challenge they are looking to raise over £5,000 much needed funds for our charity.
Despite being physically drained, our challengers took a standing ovation at the Construction Industry Summer Ball and were seen dancing into the small hours of the morning celebrating their success.
Special mention must go to Colleen McCoy of McCoy Engineering for masterminding the event and planning the route and to Steve McNicholas of McNicholas Construction for supporting the event not only by gaining company support but for personally driving the support vehicle and ensuring the event completed without incident.
For those inspired by the recent Tour de France, we will be looking to do this again next year….. any takers ????
