Rain never stopped play!...
As the golfing gladiators assembled on the 2nd July for the second running of the Burdens Construction Industry Charity Golf Day in the majestic surroundings of the Vale of Glamorgan Golf Resort in Wales, the heavens opened and all were left scrambling for their umbrellas and waterproofs. Some even went searching for wood to build an ark! However, the squall blew over and the 21 teams were soon in position for the 12:00 shotgun start.
This year we used the VPAR system to score our event. This is an electronic handheld device that allows the players to enter their score real time as they play each hole. The Vale of Glamorgan does not get conquered easily and within a few hours the VPAR system showed a titanic battle emerging between 4 teams at the top of the leader board. On course we had the usual "Beat the Birdie", "hole in one" and straightest drive completions.
It was “nip and tuck” right up to the end and the final hour of the competition saw the course bathed in glorious sunshine as the team from ACO Technologies finally emerged as the outright winners on 110 stableford points.
* 1st ACO Technologies; Simon Wilkinson, Luke Dekonski, Roger Jones and Alan Driscoll- 110
* 2nd Damar Group; Iain Dickie, Martin Whitfield, Leighton Morgan, Bryan Powell - 106
* 3rd Wavin; Lee Patch, Derrick Longhorn, Neil Lacobbi, Andrew Munday - 101
The evening's entertainment opened with a stunning compilation of classical arias from Wynne Evans "Mr Go Compare" and was rounded of after dinner and prize giving by the comedy genius of Paul Boardman.
The evening buzzed with fun and laughter and once again the charity cannot thank Ian Griggs and the team at Burdens enough for helping us raise a magnificent £17,000 !
