A Message from Bill Hill, CEO of the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity
Many of you will be fully aware that our industry is going through a major review of the levy payment system that funds the skills training for our workforce.
You will also be aware of our struggle last year to find the funding outside of the levy and government education budgets to ensure that an industry leading initiative called Building Lives survived.
Thanks to your generosity and the campaign with Construction News and KPMG we managed to raise enough funds to support 2 Building Lives Academies until September this year.
These academies are targeting to engage 160 young people from socially disadvantaged areas around Camden and Sutton and deliver to the industry 80 well trained pre-apprentices, work ready and with CSCS cards.
Both these academies are on stream to produce excellent results… with the first cohort of 20 young bricklayers graduating in April this year and all immediately getting work!!!
Building Lives still seeks long term strategic funding from the construction industry and the natural place for this would be the CITB but until recently the projects delivered by Building Lives have fallen outside the CITB funding criteria.
However, the CITB has now launched a new flexible and structured funds initiative that will allow Building Lives to apply for long term industry funding. Building Lives have now applied for this funding. As you are aware of the good work that is done and to add weight to their application, we would be grateful if you could put your name to this electronic petition to show your support.
Thank you for your consideration and support of this great cause.
