Scotland East has new Chairman 22/10/09
At the recent Branch AGM Colin Wells took over the reins from John O’Neill who has completed his second successful term as branch chairman. This was a reversal of the roles which took place back in 2002.
Colin has been involved in the Branch since the early eighties and on the committee for the last 15 years or so. After 40 plus years in the industry Colin, now with Morgan Est as Principal Supply Chain Manager in Scotland, remains enthusiastic about the industry and life in general. His main interests centre round the family who all live in or close by his adopted home for 38 years in Linlithgow (Birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots), rugby, golf & charitable work with his local rugby club male voice choir.
Colin sees his biggest challenges as bringing in that new young blood which will required to take the branch forward in the coming years and maintaining the Branch successes achieved over the last 10 years in a climate which has seen the construction industry suffer more than most. Evidence of that success is the fact that it’s a ‘Full House’ at Edinburgh’s renowned George Hotel for the Branch Annual Dinner on November 13th. Compliments to organiser Fiona Coyle who has bucked this year’s trend for reduced numbers at our events. Speakers at the George will be Willie Alan and George McNeil. Both are accomplished after - dinner speakers.

J. W. Everett. 1929 – 2009 15/07/09
It is with great sadness that the Scotland East Branch have announced the death of John W Everett, a great stalwart of the Branch, who died following a long illness on Monday 13th July 2009 at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh.
John was the founder, and latterly Chairman, of Edinburgh based Civil Engineers J & J E (Contractors) Ltd. John enjoyed a long association with our Club and was involved with Scotland East Branch from it’s very early days. He was a past Chairman of the Branch, and he also served as Branch Welfare Officer for over ten years. John’s son Mark has carried on that tradition of service; members will know that Mark is our present Benevolent Fund Chairman.
John Everett’s contribution to the Civil Engineering and Building Industry in East and Central Scotland, plus his involvement in CECA (Scotland), as well as his voluntary work with the Lighthouse Club and our Benevolent Fund, cannot be over estimated.
He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Welfare Officer Change 27/05/09
With Barrie Sheppard having to relinquish this most testing job, Jeremy Southam has taken on the role of Welfare Officer and the travelling that that involves .
Jeremy is regional director for construction materials supplier Taylor Maxwell, with whom he has been since 1984.
Jeremy plays golf with a high handicap, furthermore he is a Hearts supporter, on the plus side he is married with three children.
Jeremy can count on the whole hearted support of fellow committee members in this key role.
2008 Annual Dinner 20/02/09
Branch Secretary Yvonne Foley reports:
Chairman John O’Neil addresses a ‘Full House’
The 2008 East of Scotland Lighthouse Club Dinner held at the Sheraton Hotel, Edinburgh on 14th November was a hugely successful night, enjoyed by all. Joe Camay and Billy Kelly, our speakers on the evening were well received by guests.
Guest of Honour was Chairman of our Benevolent Fund, Mark Everett. Mark gave an upbeat resume of the current activities of our Fund. “This year will be another record year” he promised, “by the end of the year we confidently expect to have distributed over £700,000 in aid to construction workers and their families who have been hit by accident or illness”. Mark underlined the valuable contribution that our Branches make to our Fund.
The official sponsor of our event was again Lafarge Plasterboard. Their Sales Director, Mr Bob Mould, commented "Once again we are delighted to be associated with such a prestigious event and as usual we have all enjoyed a fabulous evening”.
Branch Chairman John O’Neill, in his short address, thanked Fiona Coyle whose efforts made it all happen; Bob Mould and Lafarge for their valuable sponsorship; and his audience for their generosity. In fact the evening contributed close on £22,000 to our Benevolent Fund.
By every measure Scotland East’s Annual Dinner was once again a hugely successful event.
