Christmas Lunch
06/01/10

Just some of the 350 members and guests who filled the Beachcomber Club

Tim Brant reports.
After a week of wild weather, Cleethorpes welcomed our Christmas Lunch guests to the Beachcomber Club with a brilliant, sunny morning. Bookings were similar to last year, with over 350 members and their guests giving us their support; an excellent result given the present economic climate. It appeared that many guests wanted to “escape” the present conditions, enjoy a good time and support a good cause, and that they certainly did! As they arrived they were met by our persuasive raffle ticket sellers whose efforts exceeded all expectations for they raised a record sum, the highest amount ever.

Lunch started with our President, Ron Milson reciting grace that he had written for the lunch. After lunch, the Branch Patron, John Clugston DL gave a speech outlining the activities of the Lighthouse Club in the past year, highlighting the record 2008 payments given in aid by our Benevolent Fund.

After John’s account of our activities, we were entertained by comedian Mick Miller. Mick, known as “the Bald Guy with the Long Hair” soon livened up his audience, getting us all “going” with a quick fire string of jokes and it was a buzzing room that welcomed ‘auctioneer’ Nick Borst. Nick lived up to his reputation, conducting a very lively auction with much humour, which certainly helped the two hour, non-stop marathon. Bidding was very keen for such items such as tickets for Manchester United and two large toy penguins!

With another successful Christmas Lunch concluded, the Branch Committee are able to express their thanks and appreciation to the many who donated the items for our auction/raffle and for the great support from local companies and their guests. All the great efforts of the Committee and our four helpers were amply rewarded when it was learnt that this year’s Christmas Lunch had raised over £8,000 for our Benevolent Fund.

Lincs £20,000 for our Fund
02/03/09

Branch Patron John Clugson DL and Chairman Alan Hemmings with the all important cheque

A cheque for £20,000 was presented by our Chairman, Allan Hemmings to our Patron, John Clugston DL for our Lighthouse Club Benevolent Fund. The presentation was made on 23 February last at the Branch Annual General Meeting which was held at the Amethyst Hotel, East Halton. The owner of the Amythyst, Alan Turner, is a very keen Lighthouse Club member and supporter, and hosting our Branch AGM is just one measure of his support. A much larger ‘measure’ is the gallon of whisky which Alan has, for many years now, contributed towards our fund raising at the Branch Christmas Lunch. This ‘year’s supply of Scotch’ is the prize for the "Write your name on a fiver" raffle.
