Overview

Keith Bailey is Chairman of East Anglia, a Branch which covers a very big area. Activities are therefore widespread. The Christmas Lunch is held annually in the Corn Exchange Bury St. Edmunds.

The lunch is a very popular event and enjoys the sponsorship of Tarmac, whose team, led by Mark Joel, organises the event.

The Annual Golf Day is held at Hintlesham Hall. Other activities are arranged in Ipswich and Colchester.
After decades as Branch Secretary Jack Chittock stood down last year in favour of Gary Renouf. However, Jack remains on committee as joint treasurer with his son Ivan. Dan Gilkes is Membership Secretary and long serving Ian Renouf continues as Welfare Officer.

2008 Christmas Lunch
09/02/09

Chairman Keith Baily sends news of last December’s Xmas Lunch which, as with a number of our fund raising events, was hit by the ‘Credit Crunch plague’. Attendance was somewhat disappointing, approximately a third down on the bookings for 2007. Nonetheless, it was a very successful function. Our guest speaker, with an impressive scouse accent, was Jan Molby, ex Liverpool and Denmark footballer. Jan spent 12 years on Merseyside, and so had many a tale to tell. His skill from the ‘spot’ was renowned – 42 goals from 45 penalties, and he scored again with our East Anglia members and their guests. Jan was followed by Mick Walker, our very accomplished comedian. Mick has enjoyed over forty years spent doing every kind of job there is in show business and laughs came very easily.

In spite of the drop in numbers, the lunch raised £5,000 for our Fund, thanks especially to the much appreciated help of Tarmac Eastern Ltd. Our Dennis Tidmarsh was there representing National Council, and it was Dennis who accepted East Anglia’s £10,000 contribution to our Benevolent Fund.

During lunch Keith announced that Dave Adams and Mick Allen, East Anglia’s representatives in The Lighthouse Run, had again taken the trophy, but this time in a thirsty BMW 850I as against their efforts last year in the famous Mini.

Keith also announced, with some regret, that this was the last Xmas Lunch to be held in the venerable Corn Exchange. The local council are in the process of having a new venue built close by. Details will be advised.

Dennis Tidmarsh made a second visit when he attended our recent committee meeting, where he contributed some positive ideas that could, hopefully, increase our fund raising.
