Nostalgia boosts Fund
21/11/09

There’s nothing like steam engines and steaming draught horses to bring in the crowds. Proof of this maxim was to be seen at the 22nd Annual Hollowell Steam and Heavy Horse Show last July which attracted over 40,000 visitors in just two days. The Hollowell Show, just 8 miles north of Northampton, is a very popular annual event and once again the crowds swarmed into the show. They weren’t disappointed. There was a fabulous display of steam engines, tractors, motorcycles and cars on display and in action. For those preferring a quieter life, the beautiful heavy horses provide a real flavour of days gone by. Other ‘must sees’ included the Globe of Death stunt team and an appearance by Titan the Robot, but the list of attractions goes on and on. No question, Hollowell is a great day out and a big fund raiser.

Our Richard Cockerton is handed a £2,000 cheque by Allan Eaton MBE. Two very chuffed Gents!

Monies raised from the rally are always donated to worthy causes and this year the Lighthouse Club Benevolent Fund was chosen to be one of them. Our Vice Chairman, Richard Cockerton attended the Annual Presentation Evening on the 6th October where he was presented with a cheque for £2,000 by Allan Eaton MBE. We wish to offer a huge thank you to the organisers of this event for this very generous donation.

Greenhams give big
16/11/09

Greenham’s recent £10,000 gift to our Benevolent Fund continues a now established pattern of their generous support – this was the fourth such donation in as many years. Given the climate of our times such generosity is very much appreciated.

Greenham’s Jeff Thorndick, their five figure cheque and our Richard Cockerton

Greenham’s Sales Director Jeff Thorndick presented their cheque to our Richard Cockerton; Richard has the difficult task of generating corporate sponsorship for our fund, and for him Greenham’s gift was a welcome bonus.

Jeff Thorndick explained that “We at Greenham’s wanted to give a little back. We sell to the construction industry and therefore, when choosing a charity to support, the Lighthouse Club is an absolute fit because it helps people in the industry in which we operate. But there’s more to it than just making a donation. We are also proud to actively support the Club’s National Annual Dinner in November. Over the decades we have found that it’s not only a great way to entertain our customers it’s also a fantastic opportunity to network with other industry players.”

Announcing the gift, Richard Cockerton said – ‘A very big thank you is due to Bunzl Greeham for their fourh annual donation of £10,000 to our Lighthouse Club Benevolent Fund.

Mansell’s 100th boosts Fund
1/9/09

Two long journeys by our Fund’s Chairman Mark Everett to two cheque presentations and our Benevolent Fund was £34,500 to the good.

Mansell’s George Hood with our Mark Everett

Friday 14th August saw Mark in Aberdeen where, with Mansell’s George Hood, £47,500 was gifted to our Fund and to local charities including the Anchor unit at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. Our share of that sum was a very welcome £14,500.

A week later and Mark was at Mansell’s head office in Croydon, where he received a further £20,000. This time Mark joined Mansell’s construction director David Lines for the presentation.

presents £20,000 to Fund Chairman Mark Everett

As one of their centenary year activities Mansell chose to raise money for charities, with all of their 2,200 employees joining in. We are a major benificiary of their splendid efforts.

In his short thank you speech congratulating Mansells on their 100 years, Mark said. “This generous donation comes at a time when we need it most, fund raising has been difficult this year, and calls for our help remain at a high level. Last year we distributed £735,000, helping 450 families. This year it could well be more. These contributions from Mansell are a big boost for our Fund.”

Thames Water Gift
29/4/09

Our Kevin Clancy with the Thames Water ‘Good Order’ winners.

National Council member Kevin Clancy was at Rye Meads to accept a £1,000 donation given to our Fund by the winning team in Thames Water’s ‘Good Order’ campaign. The winners of this internal competition, which is run by the company's Health and Safety department, were the wastewater team whose efforts to eliminate ‘slips and trips’ in their field of operation was judged to be outstanding.

Thames Water's Good Order campaign began last year. Four quarterly awards of £500 are presented to teams around the company, with one prize of £1,000 given annually to the overall winner. The wastewater team also won the trophy named in honour of Dave Russ, whose 40-year career at Thames Water, latterly as a health and safety facilitator, was cut short by lung cancer in 2007.

Thames Water's Chief Executive David Owens, presenting the awards at Rye Meads Sewage Treatment Works, said: "This is a very special trophy, in memory of a much-respected former colleague, and I am extremely pleased that this year's winner, our Capital Delivery Wastewater team, has decided to give the accompanying £1,000 to such a superb cause.

Hewden/Finning Conference Contribution.
22/12/08

The picture shows Hewden’s Brian Jones (right) being congratulated by Jonny Gould, Channel 5’s popular personality and,
for one day every December, London Branch’s stupendously successful Auctioneer.

The Hewden/Finning cheque for £1,550. was presented just before the commencement of London’s ‘Lighthouse Lunch at the Café Royal’ an event which is regularly supported by Brian and his team.
The money was raised at a recent Finning UK conference which was attended by Hewden/Finning employees. During the evening meal members were encouraged to contribute at least a fiver, (by the looks of things, most of them at least doubled that!) with all monies going to their chosen charity - The Lighthouse Club Benevolent Fund.

London Marathon News
8/12/08

Every year the Lighthouse Club has gold bond places in the greatest charity marathon - the London Marathon. Since its inaugural event in 1981, the Flora London Marathon has become one of the most exciting highlights of the running year and draws runners from all over the world: in all, a total of more than 600,000 have completed the race since its inception with a record of more than 32,500 runners having crossed the line in one year. We were delighted when David Mitchell got in touch with The Lighthouse Club last year and asked if he could have one of the Club’s gold bond places in order to raise money for the cause. Here’s his story...

Marathon man David Mitchell wearing his Swift Horsman hard hat.

“It was with great sadness that I learned that Chris, a good friend and colleague, had been killed on a site where we were working. Before Chris’ death I was not aware of the Club or the support that it offers families in these kinds of situations. But following his death, the Club stepped in to help his wife and this got me to thinking about what I could do to help.

I have been in this industry for 28 years, starting as an apprentice joiner and becoming Operations Director for a very successful fit out company. I felt that I needed to do something both to help Chris’ wife but also to help others in an industry who might be in a similar situation.

One of our Directors, who is a very keen runner, persuaded me to enter the London marathon! I had never run before and finding out in December that I had a place was a bloody hard shock to my body and soul. Most people start preparing for the Marathon a year or so in advance but I had just a few months to get in all the necessary training.

I'm pleased to say that I completed the run, albeit painfully. Having run 18 miles I hobbled the last 8.2 miles with 2" blisters on the sole of each foot! But it was all worth it for a very emotional and proud day.

My company, Swift Horsman, kindly donated the £2,000 which is the minimum fundraising requirement when running in a gold bond place. In addition, I have raised £6,500 and my Managing Director has offered to match that sum. I am pleased to be here at the Café Royal to present The Lighthouse Club with a cheque for £15,000.”

At the London Branch Christmas Lunch, David was thanked for his outstanding fundraising and congratulatedon his magnificent achievement.

This was also an opportunity was to wish Justin French, our runner in 2009’s London Marathon, the very best of luck with his training and with his fundraising.

During the lunch it was learned that Kevin Minton, senior manager of the CPA (the Contractors Plant-hire Association) will be running for our Fund.

Furthermore, we believe that the London 2012 organisation will produce a marathon competitor to run for our Fund.

Sibbald’s bigger Belfast Bucks

John Kennedy on behalf of SIBBALD Training presents £3,025, raised at the 2008 Royal Ulster Agricultural Society Balmoral Show, to Mervyn Logan, Chairman of our Northern Ireland Branch. (l. to r.) John Kennedy [SIBBALD Manager / Ireland], Willie McCabe [SIBBALD Plant Instructor / Scotland], Mervyn Logan, Branch Chairman.

David Sibbald and his teams are the finest kind of supporters any charity could wish for, - long term, consistent and innovative. The presence of Sibbald Training at a plant show means that the Lighthouse Club gets publicity, our Benevolent Fund is guaranteed a substantial donation, and visitors to the show enjoy a lot of fun.

Earlier this year Sibbald Ltd. had a presence at their two regular venues, first at Scotplant, (the Hamilton Show as was), then at the Balmoral Show in Belfast. Scotplant earned our Fund over £2,000 (see below), and the fun at the Northern Ireland show brought forth a further £3,025. That figure, £1,000 greater than last year, was a gratifying reward for the effort that Sibbald’s Northern Ireland manager, John Kennedy, and his team put into their Balmoral Show’s fund raising wheezes. For a limited number of young, budding, Plant & Machinery operators, a Yanmar SV08-1 Micro Digger, (kindly loaned by Crumlin Plant Sales, Craigavon), was on hand for them to test their skills under professional supervision. For the not so adventurous many, Sibbald’s tombola was a chance to win Model Machines.

Commenting on the three days of fund raising, John Kennedy said – “On behalf of all the staff at Sibbald Training, I take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks to all the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society Members and to the General Public who so generously donated funds while taking part in our Micro Digger Skills Test and Model Machines tombola”.

Our sincere thanks to all Sibbald staff for their continuing efforts in support of our Benevolent Fund.

3 Peaks – 5 Grand!

The Three Peaks Presentation at the Ameythyst Hotel (l. to r.) Clive Thornley (MD Brianplant) Dean Chalder, Philippa Thornley, Lisa Beveridge, John Clugston, Simon Beveridge, Neil Carter.

Lincolnshire Branch
29 September 2008

A presentation was held at the Amethyst Hotel, East Halton when a cheque for £4,832 was presented by a team of employees from Brianplant (Humberside) Ltd. and NCC Plant Services to the Lincolnshire Branch of The Lighthouse Club (Construction Charity). This splendid sum was contributed by friends and customers who sponsored the team’s grueling 24 hour, Three Peaks Challenge on 24/25 May 2008.

The cheque was handed over by Philippa Thornley, on behalf of the seven team members to John W A Clugston DL, Patron of our Lincolnshire Branch. Members of the team are Lincs. Branch members and their contribution will supplement the Branch’s annual donation to our Benevolent Fund.

Certificates of Appreciation were handed to each of the team members in recognition of their splendid efforts.

A step by step account of their pretty fraught 24 hours is available here.
