C.I.O.B. Quiz Night

There was a full house at Plymouth’s Royal Corinthian Yacht Club on Jan. 29th for our second C.I.O.B./ Lighthouse Club Quiz Night. This was a most enjoyable, fun evening and it is now firmly settled into our annual calendar.

There were sixteen teams racking their brains, two of them crewed by Lighthouse hands. Rob Bennett, S.W. Branch secretary, captained a Hays team and the ‘Lighthouse Club’ team was captained by our national council man Tony Green. There was a good mix of construction people from contractors and consultancies, just right for a typical Lighthouse Club night out.

(l. to r.) The C.I.O.B.’s Tony Tucker with Tony Green, Rob Bennett and a cheque for £1,000

Presenting a cheque for £1000 to Rob and Tony Green, Tony Tucker, who was elected in 2009 as Chairman of the CIOB Plymouth Branch, said "We have supported the Lighthouse Charity for over 2 years now and are delighted to present this cheque to the Club, and we will be supporting the charity to the end of my term and hopefully beyond."

Despite Rob Bennett's team coming last in the quiz, Rob commented "It was a fantastic night, well organised and great fun. The CIOB events in the past 12 months have raised a superb amount for the Lighthouse Club and we sincerely thank them. Without donations to the club and our Benevolent Fund we would be struggling to help the many individuals and families who fall upon hard times within the construction industry.

The success of this, our second CIOB get together, can be judged by the fact that, on the night, around £700 was raised.

Ladies Night at Langstone Cliff
12/06/09

Attending our Ladies Dinner and Dance at the Langstone Cliff Hotel we had three star guests – The Bachelors, Con and Dec, with their silky smooth sixties songs, and our own Mark Everett, Chairman of our Benevolent Fund. It was a rather special night.

As they arrived, each of our lady guests was presented with a bouquet, a very successful plow which made them feel special right from the start. The excellent 4 course dinner was taken at a leisurely pace which put our 120 guests in a very generous mood for the prize draw and auction. Later in the evening everyone enjoyed the performance of The Bachelors before dancing the night away at the disco.

One of the highlights of the evening came when the branch proudly presented our Chairman of the Benevolent Fund, Mark Everett, with a cheque for £8,000. In his short ‘thank you’ speech Mark praised the efforts of the committee which, in two short years, had revived the fortunes and activity of South West Branch. The event was a resounding success, everyone had a good time, and a substantial profit was made for our fund.

Race Day at Exeter
22/12/08

The latest addition to South West’s calendar was a day at Exeter Races on Haldon Moor. The day out was arranged for 11th November by organiser Susanne Furse who spread the word to some effect, since this initial midweek venture attracted a lively crowd forty strong. They enjoyed good excellent wonderful weather which added to the pleasure of this moorland course.

Here’s our party, ready for their walkabout in brilliant sunshine.

As our group assembled they were treated to a welcoming glass of buck’s fizz, the first of many pleasures during the day. There was a conducted tour of the racecourse which, according to leading trainer Henrietta Knight, is the best non-Grade 1 track in the country.

The memorial to Best Mate

A poignant moment in the tour was a visit to the memorial to ‘Best Mate’ a three times Gold Cup winner and a great hearted horse, who died whilst racing at Exeter.

Our suite gave a panoramic view of the racing.

Our group had the use of the Trevado Suite, which gave a great view of some thrilling ‘over the sticks’ racing. Advice on ‘Form’, very useful for the uninitiated, came from Exeter’s ‘tipster in chief’. He/she was well informed! The catering staff provided a scrumptious lunch, and, later, afternoon tea.

Good to see quite a few young people at our Lighthouse event.

This was an excellent ‘first time’ event for the branch, thoroughly enjoyed by our members and their guests, with the added bonus of a contribution to our Fund. It could become a permanent fixture in our calendar.

The Lighthouse Trophy Winners
29/10/08

Cox Silver Lighthouse trophy

One of the highlights of the Lighthouse Club’s Annual National Dinner is the presentation of the Cox Silver Lighthouse trophy to the branch that has been most successful in the recruitment of new members to the Club. This year – 2008 – the accolade went to our recently re-formed South West Branch.

As with all branches, there are key players whose efforts to ‘further good fellowship’ go beyond the call of duty and the citation accompanying the trophy named three individuals who have taken every opportunity to advance the Club.

The citation reads:
This year, the winner of our Cox Silver Lighthouse is a branch that has been re-invigorated by, in the main, three people, they are Suzzanne Furse, Rob Bennett and Tony Green. All three have worked tirelessly for the club.

Presenting the trophy, our President, Kevin McNicholas congratulated Tony, who accepted the Trophy on behalf of our South West Branch. Our President was echoing the good wishes of all club members when he expressed the hope that our reinvigorated South West Branch goes from strength to strength.

It was fitting that Tony, although ‘officially’ a member of our Western branch, was the recipient of the trophy. Tony does a tremendous amount of work, not only at National Council level, but also for his own Western branch and for our other branches in the south and west of the U.K. It was Tony who was the driving force behind the resurgence of the Club’s fortunes in the South West.
