Midlands Golf Day
16/07/10
The 9th hole and Club House
As usual Midlands Branch Golf Day (main sponsors AGD & ECO-Foundations) was held at Edgbaston Golf Club on
Wednesday 30th. June, a brilliant summer’s day.
14 teams competed in this, the 16th annual event, and they enjoyed a glorious day. Out on the course it was 24 degrees and shorts and sun cream were the order of the day! Our golfers found Edgbaston looking a picture, in fantastic condition and at the end of the day there was a splendid dinner to follow the proceedings!
The ECO Foundations Team captained by Bill Law
The morning Texas Scramble Competition was won by Buckingham Group off the 1st tee and by Groundforce Shorco off the 10th tee.
In the afternoon the Team Championship Stableford was won by J & T McCafferty, in 2nd place was Buckingham Group and 3rd place was taken by Premier Group Services.
The Individual Championship Stableford was won by Mike Atkinson of the J & T McCafferty team with 38 points, 2nd place went to Richard Stubbs of Team Beast also with 38 points and 3rd was Neil Smith of Team Beast again with 38 points, it could not have been any closer!
The longest drive was won by John Sankey of the J & T McCafferty team and the nearest the pin was won by Ben Weston of the Wragge & Co team.
Along with the Gordon Hawkins Trophy the prize table held some very elegant crystal.
In all, just under £3,000 was raised for the Lighthouse Club Benevolent Fund.

Our Stand at Executive Hire Show
20/02/10
Our very smart set-up at Ricoh Stadium
Midlands Branch enjoyed a successful two days at the plant and tool show held in Coventry
Laurence Bonner reports:
We had a busy two days; with over 100 exhibitors, the show was very popular and saw a steady stream of visitors. Our administrator Mandy Mallett arranged for Lighthouse paraphenalia to be delivered to and Andrew Pike and I set out our stall. During the two days of the show our stand was continuosly manned by secretary Lyndsay Pearson, Spike Milligan, Mike Phillips and Andrew Pike. Their unanimous verdict was that our presence there was well worth while – there was a lot of interest from the visiting plant and construction people and, says Laurence as well as promoting our Club in a very favourable light there is every likelyhood of some new members signing up.
Andrew, who spent a lot of time on our stand, reports that Alan Guthrie, who takes the pics for Hire News is among those who were interested in membership
Clive Innes. An appreciation.

Branch Chairman Laurence Bonner writes:
It is with great sadness that I have to pass on the news that Clive Innes passed away on the morning of Thursday 26th November, he had been having chemotherapy treatment for a recurring bout of cancer.
Clive was a staunch member of the Lighthouse Club, he was nominated onto the Midlands Branch Committee in 1989 and he became the Liaison Officer in 1993. Clive was elected Chairman in 1999 and served until 2003, during which time he pulled the Branch together and raised substantial funds for our Benevolent Fund.
He will be sadly missed by all those who knew him, such a great loss at only 61 years old.
I am sure our thoughts are with Joan and his Family at this sad time.
Edgbaston Golf Day
14/8/09
The 15th Annual Midlands Branch Golf Day was held at Edgbaston Golf Club, Birmingham on Wednesday 1st July on a glorious summers day (now just a distant memory). It was about 27 degrees and shorts and sun cream should have been the order of the day, a great improvement on our last year’s visit when, in the morning, our players teed off in blustery conditions.
Andrew Pike and Chairman Laurence Bonner.
They put together a great day’s golf.
The fact that we bucked the trend for lower turn outs was another improvement. We had 20 teams competing on this glorious July day, four more than last year. They found the Edgbaston course looking a picture and in fantastic condition, and, as usual, we enjoyed a really splendid dinner to follow the proceedings. That and the ‘craic’ rounded off a memorable day in fine style!
UGS Technique studio were 1st place Texas Scramble from 1st tee
Birmingham Glass Group. 1st place Texas Scramble from the 10th tee
Although our trophies were well spread among our competing teams our ‘stalwarts’ were there yet again. The morning Texas Scramble Competition was won by UGS/Techniquestudio off the 1st tee and Birmingham Glass Group, (last year’s Stableford winners) off the 10th tee.
SM Plant Sale’s team took first place in the Stableford
The two chaps accepted all the crystal for Hewden Plant’s 2nd place team.
In the afternoon, last year’s Texas victors SM Plant Sales won the Team Championship Stableford, in 2nd place was Hewden Plant Ltd and 3rd place was the Premier Group Services.
Individual Winner Barry Pacey being presented with our winner’s trophy by Lyndsay Pearson, Branch Secretary
The Individual Championship Stableford was won by Barry Pacey of the J & T McCafferty team with 41 points, 2nd place went to John Timmins of CMPE and 3rd was David Gordon of the Eversheds team.
The prize for longest drive was won by John Timmins of CMPE and the ‘nearest the pin, was won by Gary Robinson of the J & T McCafferty team.
John Timmins’ prize for Longest Drive
was collected by George Mayo
J& T McCafferty’s Gary Robinson was Nearest the Pin
Our grateful thanks to the following for their donations: The Buckingham Group, Mr Craig Ferguson, AGD Equipment Ltd, J & T McCafferty, JCB Gunn and to SM Plant Sales for all their raffle prizes and assistance in getting as many teams to enter the event given the current economic climate in the Construction Industry.
In all £2,800 was raised for the Lighthouse Club Benevolent Fund.
Valentine’s Night Dinner Dance
24/02/09
As our Midland’s Valentine’s Night approached the committee found itself between a rock and a hard place! Due to the ‘current climate’ response had been very poor and the alternative - to cancel - would have invoked a £4,000 charge. However, a concerted effort, led by Laurence Bonner, eventually brought 140 hardy souls through the snow to the St John’s Hotel Solihull on Saturday 7th February.
That figure of140 revelers was still loss making, but the evening was saved by a generous donation from Chris & Lyndsay Pearson of Pike Signals, our event’s major sponsors, without whose generous donation we would not have made any profit.
Friends when we needed them most!
Chris & Lyndsay Pearson.
Our Valentine’s dinner and dance is a formal event, as can be seen below
All ready for Party Time
But as the evening progressed Jackets were unbuttoned and in some devil-may-care cases, ties were discarded!
Laurence and Denise Bonner as the evening progressed. Laurence was M.C. for the evening and he tossed the coin for a very profitable heads and tails. The raffle was the best ever, thanks to the very generous donations of raffle prizes, especially from Paul Savage of Savage Plant Hire. E H Smith & co. and members of our Committee.
Just some of the many raffle prizes
Our guests were very generous when it came to the purchase of the raffle tickets, more so perhaps thanks to the persuasiveness our ticket sellers Denise Bonner & Isla Franks.
Isla Franks persuading a handsome chap to buy tickets.
Not too difficult – it’s husband Brian.
Music came from Chris Poole and the Shades, an eight piece combo. who were fantastic and had everyone dancing the night away.
Laurence says: “It was a great evening and I am sure that everyone had a great time. Denise and I did”!!
Our thanks to the major companies who supported us:
